At Neuron & Rose Psychological Services, our clinicians (both doctoral and master’s level) are now offering abbreviated evaluations so you can finally get confirmation of what you’ve known all along.

Autism Assessments CAN BE ACCESSIBLE

At Neuron & Rose Psychological Services, our abbreviated testing process provides insights into your unique brain and support needs. We help highlight what autism actually is and identify concrete ideas for ways you can accommodate yourself, and advocate for accommodations and supports from others.

WHY ABBREVIATED EVALUATION instead of comprehensive?

Abbreviated evaluations are perfect for folks who are fairly certain they are Autistic and want a quick, collaborative assessment process with minimal paperwork and time. They are also ideal for folks looking to understand their brain, have done a lot of research on their own ahead of time, and do not need comprehensive support services at the end.

These evaluations are shorter and more affordable. They are conducted by neuroaffirming assessors trained in affirming assessment, how autism presents in high maskers and folks raised as girls, as well as folks with multiply marginalized identities. They will provide you with either a letter documenting any diagnoses or a short 3-5 page report. Here’s a quick comparison:

Abbreviated ADULT Autism Testing Process

Here at Neuron & Rose Psychological Services, clients interested in abbreviated autism testing can schedule a free 15-minute consult with someone from the assessment team. This is to ensure all questions are answered and that the process and next steps are discussed.

The assessment process itself is virtual, so you don’t need to come into the office. The virtual assessment process allows you to remain in the environment that is most comfortable for you. Further, you are encouraged to have sensory fidgets on hand and dress comfortably.

As an adult being tested for autism you are encouraged to share results from online self-tests (such as the raads autism test), notes you’ve taken about autistic traits you relate to, or even anecdotes from those around you, if applicable.

Our abbreviated evaluations typically last for three appointments. Each appointment lasts about two hours depending on individual support needs. Appointments are once or twice a week depending on your assessor and your availability.

You will receive the results of your autism assessment at your feedback session, which typically occurs two weeks after your final testing appointment. The final letter and/or report can be expected roughly four to eight weeks after the final testing appointment.

Sometimes we recommend that clients engage in ongoing support such as individual therapy, family therapy, or occupational therapy. We can provide individual therapy at the clinic if our clinicians are a good fit. If not, we will provide referrals. We also offer resources/referrals tailored to your specific needs.

Neuron and Rose practices from a neurodiversity-affirming framework. We believe that neurodiversity is natural and worthy of appreciation and celebration. We understand the unique challenges that you face navigating neurotypical spaces. We also recognize that an autism diagnosis often co-occurs with other conditions such as depression and anxiety. Our expert clinicians provide ongoing care and support, focused on improving your well-being, strengthening authentic connections, finding community, and truly healing from burnout.

Our Abbreviated Pricing Model

We want to ensure that as many people who need abbreviated evaluations are able to access it. We have created a Pay What You Can model that supports our community while also taking into account the skills of our providers. In order to support these Pay What You Can spots, we have to maintain a certain amount of Full Pay spots, therefore, there may be a wait!

Frequently Asked Questions About abbreviated Autism Testing…

What if I'm a high masker?

No worries, we will collaborate during the process and ask you questions about your lived experiences of non-verbal communication and socialization, without relying on our observations. We understand that many people, especially people raised as girls (AFABs) have been socialized to make more eye contact and to engage in give-and-take conversation, and thus will fly under the radar and be missed unless directly asked about these autistic traits. We’re up to date on the research of masking/camouflaging.

Is it worth it? Can I just self-diagnose?

Though there are many benefits to a formal assessment, it may not be required unless you are seeking certain kinds of resources. Self-diagnosis is valid. You get to decide what is best for you and your needs. We can discuss more about the pros and cons of each method on the consult call and figure out what’s best for you.

will my college/psychiatrist/whomever accept any diagnoses you provide?

Similar to the comprehensive assessment process, it is never guaranteed that any outside provider/entity will recognize a diagnosis given by us. Please check in with any providers or institutions to see any requirements they have about the testing process that you engage in.

Can you formally diagnose adults with autism without having parents involved?

Yes! We do not require participation from anyone in your life other than you! We offer the option of having family, friends, spouses, etc involved, but only if you are comfortable.

Can you Explore other diagnoses? What would be the procedure if you want to explore other differentials?

Explore, yes, but diagnose, unfortunately, no! We can screen for other diagnoses during the abbreviated assessment, but if you want something fully explored, then a comprehensive evaluation is what you are looking for!
